They can be TBT (Turn Based Tactics), TBS (Turn Based Strategies), SRPG (Strategy Role Playing Games) , TRPG (Tactical Role Playing Games) , Turn Based Roguelikes etc...
They all have 4 game mechanics in common:
- unit organization (for example a grid, radius),
- positioning and movement (be able to Backstab and Flank),
- turned based (or pausable) and
- have a tactical battle layer.
I like this definition:
